Understanding Class Rank
Understanding Class Rank
Policy #214

• Purpose: The Crawford Central School District Board of Directors acknowledges the usefulness of a system of computing grade point averages and class ranking for secondary school graduates to inform students, parents, and others of their relative academic placement among their peers.

• Authority: The Crawford Central School District Board of Directors authorizes a weighted system of class ranking for all students in grades 9 through 12.

• Guidelines: Class rank shall be computed by the final grade for those subjects identified as included in class rank. Students who enroll in Cochranton Junior Senior High School and Meadville Area Senior High School will be included in class rank and will be eligible for Valedictorian and Salutatorian if the student enrolls in that respective building prior to the second semester of the sophomore year. Students who enroll in Crawford Central School District from a home education program or cyber school will not be included in class rank or eligibility for Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Class rank, including the determination of Valedictorian and Salutatorian, will be determined at the end of the fourth nine week grading period. Any two (2) or more students whose computed grade point average are identical shall be given the same rank. The rank of the student who immediately follows a tied position will be determined by the number of students preceding him/her and not by the rank of the person preceding him/her.

• Policy #216: A student's grade point average and rank in class shall be entered on his/her record and shall be subject to the Crawford Central School District Board of Directors' policy on release of student records. Rank in class shall be entered on students' records and on all transcripts where they will be available for review by authorized persons.

• Delegation of Responsibility: The Superintendent shall provide for the development of procedures for the computation and assignment of class rank to implement this policy.
